Learn how to change outboard oil in a Mercury Outboard
Maintaining your Mercury outboard provides a peace of mind knowing that your motor will function efficiently when out for a day on the water. Mercury Marine recommends that you change your oil at least every 100 & 300 hours. Of course, change the oil more frequently as needed.
Oil changes are an important part of maintaining an outboard motor. Changing the oil of an outboard provides the proper lubrication for the internal components of the motor. Before you get started, be sure to visit your local Mercury Marine Dealer for the best outboard oil & outboard oil filters. Avoid the temptation to go cheap with aftermarket oil made with budget lubricants that can cause harm to your motor down the road.
To start, you will need the following items:
Socket Wrench Drain Pan Oil Filter Socket Oil Filter Funnel Mercury 4 Stroke Oil Rags
Once you have all your items, consult the video above for instructions on how to drain the oil from your motor. Once you are ready to tip your motor to start draining the oil, make sure that the drain pan is positioned correctly to catch the draining oil.
Now that all the oil has completely drained & the oil drain plug has been replaced, move on to changing the oil filter as shown on the Mercury video. Next, fill your motor with oil. Consult your outboard owner’s manual for proper oil amounts. Finally, follow the recommended final steps such as checking for oil leaks. And always be sure to consult your outboard motor’s owner manual to verify the steps above are in agreement with the manufacturer’s recommendation.
